The MOC3021 is an optocoupler designed to provide electrical isolation between low-voltage control circuits and high-voltage AC loads. It integrates an infrared emitting diode (IRED) on the input side and a light-activated silicon bilateral switch (triac) on the output side, enabling efficient control of AC devices through low-voltage DC signals.
Key Features
High Isolation Voltage: The device offers a minimum isolation voltage of 5,000 Vrms, ensuring robust separation between input and output circuits.
High Repetitive Peak Off-State Voltage: With a minimum of 400V, the MOC3021 is suitable for controlling high-voltage AC loads.
Low Input Trigger Current: The IRED requires a forward current of just 5 mA to activate the output triac, making it compatible with various control circuits.
Pin Configuration
The MOC3021 features a 6-pin Dual Inline Package (DIP):
Pin 1 (Anode): Connects to the positive side of the input signal.
Pin 2 (Cathode): Connects to the negative side of the input signal.
Pin 3 (NC): Not connected internally.
Pin 4 (Main Terminal 1 - MT1): Connected to one end of the output triac.
Pin 5 (NC): Not connected internally.
Pin 6 (Main Terminal 2 - MT2): Connected to the other end of the output triac.
Working Principle
When a sufficient forward current is applied to the IRED (between pins 1 and 2), it emits infrared light that activates the light-sensitive triac between pins 4 and 6. This activation allows current to flow through the connected AC load, effectively switching it on. The optical coupling ensures electrical isolation between the low-voltage input and the high-voltage output, enhancing safety and reducing noise interference.
Applications
The MOC3021 is widely used in applications requiring isolation and control of AC loads:
Solid-State Relays (SSRs): Utilized as the input stage to provide isolation between control signals and high-voltage load circuits.
Motor Control: Employed to isolate control circuits from high-voltage motor drives, protecting sensitive components and ensuring safe operation.
Lighting Control Systems: Used in dimmers and automated lighting to manage AC power delivery safely.
Industrial Automation: Facilitates safe interfacing between low-voltage control systems and high-voltage actuators or sensors.
