The 7808 is a fixed 8V positive voltage regulator from the popular 78xx series. It provides a stable and regulated 8V DC output from a higher input voltage (typically 11V–30V), making it ideal for powering microcontrollers, sensors, audio devices, and other 8V-rated electronics. This linear regulator is housed in a TO-220 package, which makes it easy to mount with or without a heatsink.
How It Works:
The 7808 regulates voltage by dissipating excess input voltage as heat, maintaining a constant 8V output. Simply connect the input pin to your unregulated power source (e.g., 12V), the ground pin to system ground, and the output pin will deliver a smooth 8V. It features internal short-circuit protection, thermal overload protection, and safe area compensation for reliable performance.
Specifications:
Output Voltage: 8V (Fixed)
Output Current: Up to 1A (with proper heatsinking)
Input Voltage Range: 11V to 30V
Dropout Voltage: ~2V
Regulation: ±2% output tolerance
Package: TO-220
Built-in protection: Short-circuit, overheat, and overvoltage protection
Pin Configuration (TO-220 Package):
Input (Vin)
Ground (GND)
Output (Vout)
Limitations:
As a linear regulator, it dissipates excess energy as heat—inefficient for high current loads.
Requires a heatsink for sustained operation at higher currents.
Not suitable for step-up voltage applications (only step-down from higher voltages).
Efficiency drops significantly if input voltage is much higher than 8V.
