This 5mm IR Infrared Transmitter and Receiver LED Pair is a versatile combination for a wide range of infrared communication applications. The transmitter emits infrared light (usually at a wavelength of 940nm), while the receiver detects the infrared signals, making it ideal for projects such as remote control systems, object detection, data transmission, and proximity sensing. It’s commonly used in DIY electronics, robotics, and consumer electronics.
The IR LED transmitter and the photodiode-based receiver in this set are designed to work together seamlessly, enabling point-to-point communication and easy integration with microcontrollers such as Arduino and ESP32.
How It Works:
Transmitter LED: The infrared LED emits infrared light when current is passed through it. This light is invisible to the human eye but can be detected by the paired IR receiver.
Receiver LED: The photodiode in the receiver LED detects the modulated infrared light emitted by the transmitter. The receiver can be connected to a microcontroller to detect signals, which are then decoded or used to trigger actions.
This set is perfect for creating communication links (e.g., in remote controls) or detecting objects (e.g., in obstacle avoidance robots).
Specifications:
Transmitter LED:
Type: 5mm IR Infrared LED
Wavelength: 940nm
Forward Voltage: 1.2V – 1.4V
Forward Current: 20mA (typical)
Power: 50mW
Beam Angle: Narrow (approx. 20°)
Receiver LED:
Type: 5mm IR Photodiode Receiver
Peak Wavelength: 940nm
Voltage: 5V (compatible with most microcontrollers)
Response Time: Fast (up to 50kHz)
Output: Digital signal (HIGH when detecting IR light, LOW otherwise)
Package: 5mm (standard LED size)
Limitations:
The transmission range of the IR LED is limited by the current driving the LED and the sensitivity of the receiver, typically up to 5 meters under ideal conditions.
Line-of-sight communication is required between the transmitter and receiver for optimal performance.
Ambient lighting (such as sunlight) can interfere with infrared transmission, so ensure to use in controlled environments or shielded setups.
The receiver is sensitive only to modulated IR signals, so proper modulation frequency must be used for communication.
